The parent who allegedly threatened a teacher at Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) on Tuesday has been identified as Remlani Tambuang, the regional head of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Davao.

Newsline, a local news website in Davao, identified Tambuang from the police blotter filed by the school officials.

According to the police blotter, Tambuang arrived on campus at around 3pm on Tuesday with his sister Walina Tambuang and an unidentified bodyguard.

The administration’s vice president radioed a “code black” to security personnel, which signifies a personal threat on campus.

When Tambuang was met by 10 security officers on campus, he shouted at them in Tagalog: “What’s the problem here? Why are there so many guards? I don’t think I’m that criminal, don’t you guys know I’m the Comelec director?”

He then allegedly threatened to not grant Dasia, the security agency hired by the school, a firearms exception for the upcoming election period.

The guards, according to the police report, then told him: “there’s no problem sir, we’re just roving.”

After, Tambuang allegedly went to the teacher and told him: “don’t you know we’re a family of lawyers and killers?”

Yesterday, the university’s president Joel Tabora, who is also a Jesuit priest, said in a statement that the university was planning to file charges against Tambuang, who he initially did not identify.

“When a parent accompanied by relatives and bodyguards comes in brandishing statements like ‘WE ARE A FAMILY OF LAWYERS AND KILLERS!’ or ‘WE CAN TAKE DOWN THIS SCHOOL’ — these are statements the AdDU as a University can only take very seriously as they threaten the safety and security of its personnel,” Tabora said.

He clarified, though, that Tambuang didn’t have a firearm like what had been initially reported.

Tambuang allegedly visited the school to complain about a bad grade his child received.

Tabora explained that there is a process for parents who have complaints or those who feel like their child was treated unfairly, but he also encouraged students to handle complaints on their own.

“As a matter of policy, students are expected to present their side personally before said body, as it is part of the formative aspect of an Ateneo education to train them to be self-reliant and independent young adults,” Tabora said.

Davao City is the hometown of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who attended Ateneo de Davao high school when he was younger but was later expelled.
