Catholic Church tells Filipino youth to cut down on social media

Lenten season, which began last Wednesday, is supposed to be a time of sacrifice for practicing Catholics.

So this year, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is challenging the youth to cut back on something Filipinos spend a lot of time doing: social media.

“There are enriching things in social media but young people should learn how to reduce time on things that waste their time,” Fr. Conegundo Garganta, CBCP executive secretary, said over Church-run Radio Veritas last night.

“Too much engagement in social media can also be time-wasting. We spend a lot of time on things that are not important,” he added.

For the third year in a row, a study by We Are Social found that the Philippines spends the most time on social media than anyone else in the world.

“Choose images and activities that are worth sharing, that can have a positive impact not only for you but also for others,” Garganta said in his message to young Filipino Catholics.

He encouraged them to share Lent-related pictures, and spiritual readings and reflections.

According to the latest data, about 33 million Filipinos have a Facebook account, while 80 percent of the country’s 100 million people are Catholics.
