Living in a multicultural country means understanding and respecting other races and their cultures, however, one young man did not pass the vibe check when he destroyed a Deepavali ‘kolam’.
The man wearing a blue baju Melayu, a songkok, and sampin songket was seen purposefully walking over a kolam spread out in what appeared to be a building lobby and ruining the design with his foot in the 39-second video that went viral on social media. Meanwhile, the person recording it can be heard giggling and saying “vandalism”.
Kolam, which means “beauty” is a floor drawing made from colored flour used for ornamental or ceremonial design during traditional Indian festivities.
Naturally, the man’s actions caused outrage among Malaysians, who said what he did was outright “racist” and “embarrassing”.

“This asshole is purposely trying to sabotage Malays. Best you just throw away the songkok and clothes and go naked. At least people will know you are crazy!”
“To me, it’s simple, my religion teaches us respect. If he doesn’t respect other people’s religion, means he has no religion. Simple. The logic is only crazy people and assholes don’t know how to respect other people.”
The incident is said to have occured at the Klang KPJ Specialist Hospital. In a statement, the hospital said it has launched an internal investigation and that stern actions will be taken if the man is one of its staff.
It said it was made aware of a video, allegedly depicting one of their staff members, conducting “unprofessional behavior”.
“KPJ Klang does not any disrespect among its staff within the compound of its hospital,” it said.
Meanwhile, Klang Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner S. Vijaya Rao said the suspect would be called to have his statement recorded at the Klang Utara police headquarters today.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony or disunity.
“A report against the man was lodged by the Bandar Baru Klang police station chief,” he said in a statement yesterday.
