Two of Bali escapee prisoners caught, Malaysian inmate still on the run

There’s a reason why they never made a Shawshank Redemption part 2: these things rarely end well. For two of the four men who escaped a Bali prison earlier this week, things are decidedly taking a turn for the worst.

Let’s get to the good news first: turns out they all didn’t drown in the rain and waste tunnel they used to escape, as was previously suspected. Now for the bad news, they’re going back to prison, and for a lot longer.

Bulgarian Dimitar Nikolov Iliev and Indian Sayed Mohammed Said were busted at a hotel in Dili, East Timor, after having come to the island via boat from Bali. Confusingly, the men were initially apprehended for entering East Timor without legal documentation, only to be freed, and then recaptured as police realized that they were half of the Bali escapees.

Senior police official Henrique da Costa told the AFP, “we will most likely hand them back to Indonesia on Friday afternoon now that we know they are fugitives.” Sounds like a plan!

Our very own Malaysian Tee Kok King is still on the run, as is Australian inmate Shaun Edward Davidson. Guys, if you’re still looking for a place to get away, I know a great, cheap little Air Bnb in Ubud where you can just chill before planning just how you’re gonna get off that island.

This latest escape follows a spate of embarrassing prison breaks in Indonesia. One occurring in Jambi province, happened after prisoners swam through flood waters after a prison wall collapsed. “Most” were recaptured.

Just last month 440 inmates in Pekanbaru City escaped their Sumatra prison after guards let them out of their cells to pray. Turns out they heard a different sort of higher power message telling them to run. Only half were recaptured.

So, there you go, Tee and Shaun. The odds are 50-50. Good luck, and Godspeed.
