Local Japanese food chain Sushi Jiro has refuted accusations it sold pork at its eatery.

The restaurant published a clarification online yesterday in response to “fake information” posted by a woman who claimed that she had heard about the company’s pork-selling secret from an employee.

“We would like to clarify and reassure that we are definitely pork-free,” the statement said. “Regarding the fake information, we will investigate accordingly.”

The accuser, known as Emma Azri, has removed the allegation she posted online yesterday. In it, she claimed that a staffer from the outlet at the I-City Shah Alam mall had told her that the restaurant was serving pork and refused to let her patronize the store.

Sushi Jiro is not certified halal in Malaysia but its menu of mainly sushi and ramen does not include pork. It has ten outlets across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

Emma’s post was already viewed by thousands of people before it was taken down, although screenshots of it have circulated elsewhere.

“Since I observed that most of this sushi shop’s customers were Muslim and wearing headscarves, I thought it’d be safe,” she wrote in the Wednesday post, which included a photo of Sushi Jiro behind her.

In the post, she mentioned that all the staff members were Chinese. “I gasped when a female staff member told me, in a whisper, that they serve pork,” she added.
