Serial polygamist ‘Ustaz Kasanova’ gets jail, rotan for sex out of wedlock

A man nicknamed ‘Ustaz Kasanova’ for using his alleged credentials as a religious teacher to get himself married to not one, not four, but 13 women, was sentenced to a year in prison and six strokes of the cane for having sex out of wedlock.

Because, you know, having 13 legally-wedded wives simply isn’t enough to keep the good ustaz from sticking it where it didn’t belong.

Ustaz Kasanova, real name Mohd Razis Ismail, previously pleaded guilty on February 29 in the Kuala Lumpur Syariah High Court to the offence of having extramarital sex with a woman in a Kuala Lumpur hotel, sometime between March and May 2012.

The offence fell under Section 23(1) of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997, which states that a Muslim man committing sexual intercourse with a woman who is not his lawful wife has committed a crime.

The sexual relations had also resulted in the birth of an illegitimate child.

The woman involved had filed for confirmation of her marriage to Mohd Razis on June 28, 2011, but the Syariah Lower Court had decided their union was invalid.

“The accused had adopted the image of an ‘Ustaz’ (religious teacher) to deceive women, until he was given the title which is embarrassing to the religion,” presiding judge Nassir Abdul Aziz said when passing his sentence, as quoted by the New Straits Times Online.
