Religious preacher tells Malaysians that Michelle Yeoh’s win is only for the faithless, nothing to be proud of

When actress Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress at the Academy Awards on Sunday, it was only natural that Malaysians were overjoyed with her success and felt proud that someone from their country won such a prestigious award.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim including His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah also congratulated the 60-year-old on her win.

However, according to, one small-time Malaysian preacher, PU Syed, her win only brings pride to the ‘faithless’ as it did not bring any benefits to religious affairs in the country.

“What is there to be proud of about the Oscars? Brings pride to Malaysia? What is there to be proud of? We cannot be proud of something that doesn’t benefit religious affairs. Leave that to the faithless.” he wrote on Facebook.

This isn’t the first time the religious preacher has publicly expressed his dislike for the performing arts and the entertainment business.

He previously threatened to organize a protest against the Malaysian concert of the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK and even ‘prayed’ for a flood to stop it from happening.

Social media users lambasted the preacher for his comments and told him to stop spreading negativity.

If being ‘faithless’ but using your platform to inspire others is wrong, we really don’t mind.
