The Royal Malaysian Police have assured Malaysians that they have no reason to be alarmed over sightings of the Islamic State (ISIS) flag being flown in several parts of the country.
In the past two weeks, reports have emerged detailing sightings of the white-on-black flag of the Middle Eastern terror organisation being hoisted in Perak, Terengganu, Kedah, and Selangor.
PDRM’s Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division chief SAC Ayub Khan said the flag sightings were of no immediate concern to the public as they presented no imminent threat.
“We rely on our intelligence gathering and cooperation with other anti-terrorism agencies to prevent any attack in the country,” he told The Star Online on Wednesday.
He also asserted that the PDRM had been consistently monitoring the activities of Islamic State in Malaysia, including the movement’s efforts in recruiting Malaysians to its cause.
“We have been monitoring the situation, especially regarding the recruitment of Malaysians by the terror group.
“Our priority is the safety and security of all.”
Despite the public not having a reason to worry, the PDRM is undertaking an investigation into who had been putting up the ISIS flags.
Since early 2013, a total of 123 suspected militants have been arrested on Malaysian soil.
Of that total, 106 were Malaysians, while another 12 were Indonesians, and two were Iraqis.
