NGO claims RM1.3 mil bid for PATRIOT 1 plates; denies getting favours from UMNO

The NGO behind the open auctions for PATRIOT vehicle license plates say that an interested party “from the south” of Malaysia has put in a bid of RM1.3 million for PATRIOT 1.

Yayasan Patriot Negara Malaysia (YPNM), which opened the bidding for its exclusive, Road Transport Department-approved limited edition plates on June 1, said the bidding for PATRIOT 1 would still go on, despite the huge sum already pledged for it.

“Bidding for the number is still open because the closing date to bid for the number is July 22, 2015. Anyone who is interested can still bid for this number which is considered the most meaningful in the history of Malaysia,” YPNM said in a statement, as quoted by The Malay Mail Online

When asked if YPNM had used its ties to ruling party UMNO to get clearance to sell the (very) profitable PATRIOT plates, YPNM chairperson Brigadier-General Husainay Hashim bristled and answered, “Never. For what reason?”

Husainay served as UMNO executive secretary for five years, ending in 2009.

“If you’re free to talk to Datuk Seri Najib (Razak) and Tan Sri Muhyiddin (Yassin), you can ask them if I ever went around asking them. We don’t take instructions for patriotism. Everybody should be involved,” Husainay said.
