IGP urges calm after Hindu temple in Ipoh attacked by mentally ill man

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has called for calm and rational heads to prevail in Ipoh’s Hindu community after a mentally ill man attacked a temple in the city’s Jalan Hospital yesterday evening.

The assailant, who turned up at the Hindu temple at around 5pm, smashed several shrines residing within. After his rampage, he fled in a car before crashing it into a nearby bus stop. He was arrested by local police soon after.

Khalid told The Malay Mail Online that the individual was a doctor recently fired from the Ipoh Hospital for being mentally unsound.

He called for the Hindu community in Ipoh to remain calm, after tensions were raised last night in Ipoh as news of the attack spread among residents.

“The police have met with the Indian people in Ipoh so that they are calm to handle this problem.

“I hope the Indian community in Ipoh calms down. This was done by someone mentally unstable,” the IGP said.

He also said that the attacker would be placed at the Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan for further treatment.
