Last month, one of most famous music superstars in the world right now, Dua Lipa, a London-native with ethnic Albanian parents, was mercilessly trolled on social media by some one-dimensional Malaysian “fans.”
“Babi” in Malay translates to pig, and Malaysian users began to troll her post, inundating it with oscillating messages of taking aggressive offense to a word that meant “Dad,” and just acting like gosh-darn 5-year-olds about the matter.
Eventually, she just edited the word out, changing it to “Dad.”
Peak times in cognizant living for our youth (JK – it was super embarrassing for a lot of us!).
In the most recent issue of L’Officiel, she was asked about the incident, and responded in a manner which one could only expect after being inundated with nasty messages on your father’s birthday.
She told the mag: “It was quite mean of their behalf, because obviously I’m not talking in Malay. I speak another language as well [Albanian], and the language I speak with my parents that is my heritage. I would like that to be respected.”
So, generally disappointed, a little mad, kind of confused, hurt, and rather incredulous that anyone could take offense to you saying the word “Dad” to your Dad, in the language you speak with your Dad.
Can you blame her?
Dua will be performing to a sold-out crowd next month in Kuala Lumpur. Let’s hope we can show her that most of us aren’t bl**dy idiots.
