The Ministry of Environment and Water is searching for a boy who was filmed in a viral video tossing his school books into a river.

The ministry said yesterday the student had appeared in the 10-second clip gleefully throwing several books from a bridge after completing the SPM national examination. The boy, who was dressed in school uniform in the video, was wanted for a river clean up event as part of World Water Day on March 22.

“Recently, a video showing a student throwing his books into the river after the SPM examinations have surfaced online,” the Ministry said on Facebook yesterday. SPM is taken by all 17-year-old students in Malaysia.

It was not clear where or when the video was filmed. If they manage to find the boy, he will join the Friend of River Malaysia environmental organization for the cleaning event.

“If you know this child, the Ministry of Environment and Water would like to invite him to be a part of our Friends of River Malaysia organization so we may clean up rivers in the whole country together on March 22, which is World Water Day,” the ministry added. “With help and support from the community, this child and many others can learn more about the importance of keeping our rivers clean.”

People in the comments section wished well for the boy, including Zuraida ZR, who said: “Please study hard, child. Who knows, you may become the Minister of Environment someday.”

“Congratulations! At least he has something to do after SPM,” another Facebook user Sonriente Nina wrote.
