Malaysian singer-actor Alvin Chong is being criticized on TikTok for going out with an underage date.
Critics have been attacking the duo in the comments since both began to appear in videos together in July. The hate grew after the pair appeared to react to the negative comments in their latest video together, in which they wrote the captions: “You think you can hurt our feelings? People judge us because of our age gap.”
Chong is 29 while the date is said to be 17. Chong has also been accused on TikTok of various things after the video went up, including potentially sexually grooming his date. Anyone below the age of 18 is considered a minor in Malaysia and child groomers face US$1,200 fine and 30 years’ jail.
The teenager, known on TikTok as “Athalia,” has since implied that nothing serious was going on between the two. She wrote a comment that ended with a clown emoji that said: “People who thought this is real.”
The video, which went up on Saturday, has been viewed nearly 800,000 times. Chong, who has nearly a million followers, did not immediately respond to Coconuts KL’s request for comment.
“[I don’t know] what Alvin Chong was thinking of befriending a 17 years old girl when he himself issa 30 year old uncle :),” a comment by Twitter user @Frerinnn said.
Previous videos of the Suri Hati Mr. Pilot actor and the teen showed them in a car together while stuck in traffic, dancing, and lip-synching to suggestive phrases like “Are you looking for a wife?” and “Take you to the candy shop.”
User @Nfth09 commented: “The only reason a grown-ass man should be hanging around a 17-year-old is to give her tuition classes.”
But the teenager’s mother seems to be aware of her daughter’s friend. Noughties singer Sharifah Zarina said in an August video that her teen was with a “handsome actor” instead of out studying like she said.
