Hijab fashion entrepreneur Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor and her evangelist husband Harris Ismail paid a total of RM15,000 in bail after pleading not guilty to COVID-19 related offenses linked to a recent trip to a carpet shop.
Neelofa, 32, was charged with failing to enter her details into the MySejahtera COVID-19 contact tracing app before entering the Naeem Carpet store in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan earlier this month, while her husband, known as PU Riz, was charged with the same offense on top of another for not wearing his face mask properly by pulling it down to his chin.
They both paid RM5,000 (US$1,200) bail for each offense and pleaded not guilty at the Seremban Magistrate’s court. The Selangor-based couple, who were not charged for crossing interstate borders without police permission, were expected to return to court on June 4.
Meanwhile, nearly 20,000 people have signed an online petition demanding that Neelofa be imprisoned for constantly violating coronavirus measures, including her failure to ensure safe distancing at her wedding at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Kuala Lumpur, and crossing state borders to Langkawi island for her honeymoon with Harris.
The petition, which started yesterday, comes after the flamboyant TV host Azwan Ali, known as Diva AA, remarked on Twitter earlier this week that Neelofa should be “jailed.”
“Based on these repeated offenses, we urge the police and the government to send Neelofa to jail, without compromise, as a sure sign that the government does not have double-standards when it comes to punishing high profile criminals,” the petition said.
