Witch doctors, locally known as dukun, are still quite common in Indonesia, especially among low income citizens who are still superstitious and/or can’t afford modern medicine treatments.
As such, dukuns are given a certain degree of trust by their customers, much like what one would normally give to a licensed medical practitioner. But one dukun in Cilandak, South Jakarta is suspected of horribly abusing that trust by raping a special needs teenage girl instead of “treating” her.
The suspect, identified as 60-year-old MR, was yesterday beaten and then dragged to the South Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters by a mob following the allegation.
According to Samah, the victim’s mother, her daughter asked MR to heal her. The dukun told her to stay at his house for two days. Then, with his wife watching, MR allegedly raped the girl and got her pregnant.
“He (MR) told people, including people at the place where my daughter works, that he can heal people,” Samah said, as quoted by Sindonews.
After finding out that MR got the victim pregnant, her family was furious and went to confront the dukun. At first, MR denied the accusation, but he eventually admitted to raping the girl after he was confronted and beaten by a mob of locals.
Police have not released a statement regarding the allegation. It’s not yet known what charges MR would face.
