Culture and Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Anies Baswedan said the national education system is in dire straits at the moment. According to some data from the ministry, the Indonesian education system scored extremely low in a number of aspects over the past few years.
“The Indonesian education system is in danger. We must fix these problems immediately,” Minister Anies said, before he outlined Indonesia’s report card at the Culture and Elementary and Secondary Education Ministry today.
These are the ways in which the education system in Indonesia has failed over the past few years, as gathered by Kompas.com:
1. 75% of schools in Indonesia do not meet the minimal education service standards
2. The average teachers’ competency score is 44.5. The standard teachers’ competency score is 75
3. Indonesia ranked the lowest out of 40 countries in respect to educational quality according to The Learning Curve
4. Indonesia ranked 49th out of 50 countries in respect to their quality of higher education
5. Indonesia ranked 64th out of 65 countries in the Programme for International Study Assessment (PISA)
6. Indonesia ranked 103rd in the world in regards to the potential for corruption in its education system.
Minister Anies saod that, with all of these factors considered together, it’s no wonder that Indonesian schoolchildren often turn to violence. In October and November of this year, the number of brawls and other types of physical violence involving Indonesian students reached 230 cases.
“We are all responsible. We have to get involved. We have to fix the problem with all of our determination. There is a lot of change need in order to fix education in Indonesia,” Minister Anies said.
