While the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the rest of us muggles to either postpone wedding plans or take all the frills out of it, one police chief in West Jakarta ignored the country’s social distancing advisory, which led to a disciplinary sanction.

According to reports, Kembangan Sub-precinct Chief Fahrul Sudiana held his wedding at the upscale Hotel Mulia on March 21. That is two days after the National Police issued an edict on social distancing, which prohibited mass gatherings among other rules.

The Jakarta Metro Police’s internal affairs division (Propam) held an investigation into Fahrul’s wedding, and found that it was in breach of the edict. As a result, Fahrul has been removed from his post as the head of the Kembangan Sub-precinct and is now a policy analyst at the Jakarta Metro Police.

“If anyone disobeys the rules, whoever it is, they must face the consequences,” Jakarta Metro Police spokesman Yusri Yunus told the media today, as quoted by CNN Indonesia.

The fact that Fahrul was able to go through with his wedding, in which viral photos showed that other police officers were involved in the ceremony, stands stark in contrast with reports of police officers dispersing crowds at weddings elsewhere in the country recently.

Whether you agree with the severity of his punishment or not, at least this cop copped some blame for his irresponsible actions.
