Brawls between football supporters happen in Indonesia all the time. But you’d think a sport like water polo would attract a more civilized class of spectator.
Well, here in Indonesia, passion for water polo can apparently lead fans to fisticuffs as well.
This brawl broke out during the water polo semifinal match between West Java and South Sumatra at the 2016 Indonesian National Games (PON) yesterday at Jalak Harupat Soreang Stadium in Bandung.
The fight appears to have begun between the players in the pool before spilling out into the stands, leading to a chaotic fight between supporters of various teams and bystanders. Members of the military can also be seen throwing punches. Police officers were eventually able to calm the situation down and separate the brawlers.
According to Kompas, the brawl was started after some supporters started throwing water bottles in protest of some of the judges’ decisions against their teams.
The game was restarted and West Java eventually won the match 15-6.
