A video of a gang of thieves snatching a bag belonging to a restaurant diner in South Jakarta has gone viral on social media – serving as a reminder to the public not to leave their valuable belongings unattended.
The incident took place on May 11 at the Pagi Sore Padang restaurant in Pasar Minggu.
The video, which was submitted to and shared by the citizen journalism Instagram account @merekamjakarta, shows three masked men loitering near the victim’s table. While the victim was facing a camera for a group photo with his friends, one of the thieves sensed an opportunity to kick the victim’s backpack away from under his seat, before another picked it up and walked away from the restaurant.
According to the post, the backpack contained a laptop, a cell phone, some documents, and some cash.
Police say the victim has yet to file a report about the incident. Nonetheless, the authorities are on the case after the video went viral online.
“The culprits left the crime scene in a car,” Pasar Minggu Police Chief Rusit Malaka said.
Unfortunately, police were not able to identify the vehicle’s registration number in the CCTV footage they obtained from the restaurant.
