We don’t know whether we should be proud of the police for swiftly punishing drug abusers in the force or if we should be worried about their use of cruel punishments, as evidenced in the amateur video above.
The video, which has gone viral and been picked up by national news media, shows police officer ‘SW’ from the Gambir Police Department in Central Jakarta tied to a flagpole after he refused to take part in a drug test.
“SW has done numerous urine tests, including two in 2014. We were going to conduct another urine test yesterday (Saturday) but he ran away. And then I ordered officers to arrest him,” said Susatyo, head of the Gambir Police Department, as quoted by Vivanews on Sunday.
The police arrested SW at his home and brought him into the police station for a urine test. Once there, he angrily refused to do the test and was then tied to a flagpole.
SW now faces up to four years in prison for drug abuse. If convicted, he will be dishonorably discharged from the police force.
