“Speedcubing”, or the competitive sport of solving Rubik’s Cube puzzles as fast as humanly possible, is popular all around the globe including Indonesia. Numerous speedcubing events are held here every year, and at the Jawa Timur Open in Blitar, East Java, on Sunday, a new world record for the fastest Rubik’s Cube solution ever recorded was set by Dutch speedcubing master Mats Valk.
Watching Valk’s insanely fast feat really makes us question whether he is an actual human being or one of those robots from Westworld, but either way it is damn impressive.
Valk’s new record of a mere 4.74 seconds beat the previous record of 4.9 seconds set by 14-year-old American student Lucas Etter in 2015.
Valk previously held the Rubik’s Cube speed world record in 2013 with a time of 5.55 seconds. He also holds the world record for the most cubes in one hour: 374.
A true Rubik’s Cube aficionado, Valk has practiced his skills in some pretty unique locations, including 3,726 meter above sea level at the top of Mt Rinjani in Lombok. We’re guessing he feels like he’s on top of the world again right now.
