For most Indonesians, it is imperative that the deceased be buried as soon as possible after they pass away, in accordance to Islamic custom. This has led to innumerable instances of vehicles escorting dead bodies driving dangerously in their rush to get to a cemetery.
Yesterday, a video showing such an incident in Makassar, South Sulawesi went viral. In it, a woman who was driving her car filmed a convoy of motorcycles escorting a dead body driving the wrong way and into her lane (her driving and filming using her phone at the same time is obviously a violation in itself, but that’s another matter).
Towards the end of the short clip, one motorcyclist can be seen raising his leg and kicking the woman’s side view mirror, breaking it.
“Must people escorting a dead body be in such a rush? Must they kick someone else’s car? I’m Muslim, but to my knowledge there’s no teaching allowing people to act like that. Do you want to escort a dead body or do you want to assault people?” the user wrote in the caption.
The South Sulawesi Police later confirmed that the incident occurred, and that the convoy actually damaged another car during their drive to the cemetery.
“They must still obey the law. Therefore, in the future, dead bodies should be escorted by police officers, not motorcyclists,” said South Sulawesi Police Spokesperson Dicky Sondani, as quoted by Detik yesterday.
The police have neither identified the people in the convoy nor the motorcyclist that kicked the side view mirror.
