Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott isn’t the most popular man in Indonesia at the thanks to his controversial tsunami aid comments (Read: In pictures: Indonesians offer to refund Aussie tsunami aid with #CoinforAustralia). But it seems Abbott has made the first step towards an apology.
Vice President Jusuf “JK” Kalla said he received a phone call recently from the Australian Prime Minister. JK said Abbott has realized his mistake.
“He (Abbott) explained that he realized what he said was a mistake. He contacted me. Their Foreign Affairs Minister (Julie Bishop) called me too,” JK said at the Vice President’s Office today, as quoted by Detik.
JK said there is no pressure from Australia to stop Indonesia from carrying out the death penalty on Australian citizens Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.
But JK noted that he did not tell Abbott or Bishop about Indonesia’s timetable for executing the Bali Nine ringleaders.
