There are certainly worse ways to get punished for cheating with your friend’s husband.
Recently, a video has gone wildly viral in Indonesia showing a woman confronting her friend for allegedly “stealing” her husband. In the video, the woman, who is identified on social media as Bu Dendy (Mrs. Dendy) from East Java, is holding and pointing the camera towards her former friend, who Bu Dendy accused of seducing her husband for his money.
In what is probably the most expensive confrontation with a side woman we have ever seen, Bu Dendy then makes it rain by showering IDR100K (US$7.36) and IDR50K (US$3.68) notes on her friend. Her anger gradually increases as she tells her, “You only want my husband’s money! Eat all this! You can buy a house! Here’s the money!” and “How much is your dignity worth?”
The dramatic nature of the video, which was reportedly first posted online by Bu Dendy herself on her Facebook page, naturally went viral in social media-obsessed Indonesia as countless memes about the video were posted in no time.

Have financial issues? Start beef with Bu Dendy
In fact, Bu Dendy became so popular that her name was the 13th top trending topic in Twitter worldwide yesterday, as reported by Kumparan.
But beneath all the drama, women’s rights activists are worried that the popularity of the video is further normalizing a patriarchal double standard in Indonesia culture in which only women are often blamed for infidelity. There was, for example, no video or post by Bu Dendy criticizing her husband, known on social media as Pak Dendy (Mr. Dendy) for his infidelity.
“It’s his behavior that is inappropriate, that of [her husband] finding another woman, but [Bu Dendy] defended her husband to death. Who is she actually attacking? The victim. This is what must be recognized so women don’t fall into a trap. [Bu Dendy] could even become a suspect if the case is processed by the law,” said Budi Wahyuni, commissioner for the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), as quoted by BBC Indonesia.
“Women fight over a man and other people ended up enjoying the conflict.”
Under Indonesian law, infidelity may be punishable by up to 9 months’ imprisonment, although only the cheated-on spouse can report infidelity as a crime and they must report both their cheating spouse and the person they were unfaithful with to the authorities. The fates of Bu Dendy, her friend, and her husband beyond the video are not yet known (including whether or not the friend actually took the money), and there has been no indication that legal steps will be taken in this case.
