We’re not completely sure what is happening in the video above, but it is definitely one of the most head scratching yet exhilarating viral videos from Jakarta in recent times.
For one, there is no law explicitly banning ride-sharing apps like Uber and Grab in Indonesia at the moment (the government is currently working on new regulations to legalize their services), so why were there so many security personnel and their cars surrounding this GrabCar driver at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport? How did they find out that he was a Grab driver in the first place?
Also, the taunting and the making of faces by the car window seemed a bit unnecessary. The driver even complained that they were, “damaging the car by banging on it [with their fists].”
At the same time, we have no idea what the driver was thinking when he decided to floor it to escape the security guards. At that time, the camera was no longer pointing at the road, but we’re sure we heard a few bumps and scrapes as the Grab driver attempted to escape.
Only to have his way blocked yet again at the airport parking lot’s exit gate. Sadly, the video ends there and right now we have no way of knowing what happened to this driver and if his crime is anything more than just being a partner driver for a ride-sharing company.
At the time of writing, there are no official statements from the police, the airport, or Grab regarding this viral video.
