Viral: Memes mercilessly mock KPI censorship of Puteri Indonesia contestants

The news that television broadcasts of last weekend’s Puteri Indonesia pageant had been censored, with contestants wearing traditional Indonesian kebaya having parts of their bodies blurred out on screen, seems to have upset quite a few people. Many netizens clearly think that KPI (the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission) have gone way too far.

And as Indonesian netizens tend to do when they feel upset and passionate about a subject, they start making memes.

First we have a simple but powerful meme showing the trajectory Indonesian censorship might be on if people don’t start protesting the censors’ increasingly conservative values.

Breaking news:
Tire valve stem censored by KPI (pentil can also mean nipple)
Update: Censorship will be tighter because Indonesians easily get horny

Breaking news:
Tornadoes censored by KPI (angin puting beliung can be literally translated word for word as wind nipple spout)

Breaking News
Without pants, Donald Duck has been censored by KPI
Update: The lack of pants is considered inappropriate, although ducks usually don’t wear shirts or hats.

That last one also refers to the censorship of children’s cartoons including Spongebob Squarepants and Doraemon.

Keep these memes coming people! They may be silly, but they also make a very important point about how ridiculous censorship is getting in Indonesia.
