Spy cameras could be anywhere, filming us at our most private moments. Perhaps the best way to avoid them is to know what they might be disguised as. And now, thanks to a Indonesian netizen, we know exactly what to watch out for in changing rooms.
Yesterday, Instagram account @drama.olshop, which collates memes and stories pertaining to online shopping in Indonesia, shared screenshots of an Instagram Stories post by user @farisanajmi, who accidentally came across spy cameras disguised as clothes hooks being openly sold on Bukalapak, one of the biggest e-commerce sites in the country, which provides an online platform for third-party sellers to promote their products.

In the post, @farisanajmi wrote that she searched for a camera strap on Bukalapak using the keywords “gantungan kamera” (the Indonesian word gantungan could either mean strap or hanger) only to find dozens, if not hundreds of stores selling spy cameras planted inside small clothes hooks. The peeping tool sells for slightly more than IDR100K (US$7.27), and some of them were blatantly advertised using pictures of women undressing in changing rooms.
While Bukalapak has not released a statement regarding the viral post, it appears that, at the time of writing, they have taken down all spy cameras/clothes hooks from their site (though other types of spy cameras, such as those hidden in car keys, remain). However, other major Indonesian e-commerce websites are still selling the product.
Coconuts Media have reached out to online sellers of spy cameras disguised as clothes hooks for comment.
