One of the few things more infuriating than being stuck in bumper-to-bumper Jakarta traffic is watching scofflaws illegally cross into the busway lanes — which are reserved only for public transportation and emergency vehicles — and zip past the rest of us stuck in the macet. Sometimes, they get caught, but often times they are able to get away with it.
We’re guessing the sight of a passing Busway lane violator is what inspired the artists at local animation producer Lakon Studios. Earlier this month they published a video clip animating a fantastic scenario involving the statue of one of Indonesia’s most famous generals coming to life to stop selfish drivers from taking the illegal shortcut.
Most Jakartans will instantly recognize the location recreated in this CGI animation as a section of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, part of the capital’s main north-south thoroughfare that is often beset with traffic ranging from bad to terrible.
The street is of course named for General Sudirman, the first commander of the Indonesian National Armed Fores and a hero of the country’s war for independence. The 6.5 meter-tall statue of him featured in the video is the same that has sat on the road since it was first erected on the street bearing his name in 2003. We’re pretty sure this animation, in which his statue comes to life after seeing one too many cars violating the busway lane rule and decides to take matters into his own gigantic hands, would’ve made the real General Sudirman proud.
In the caption, Lakon Studios says they posted the video in celebration of their 10,000th Youtube subscriber. It looks like it was a success as they’re already over 14,000 subscribers since posting the video earlier this month.
Lakon Studio’s had another animation that went viral in 2011 called “Pada Suatu Ketika” (“Once Upon a Time”) featuring a bajaj that transforms into a robot during an alien invasion of Jakarta.
