The threat of COVID-19 has led to various companies implementing physical distancing policies to reduce risks of transmission, including contactless deliveries and cashless payments. At a time when kindness and common courtesy are important, however, a couple appears to be clueless about how to behave amid this pandemic, and a video catching their ignorance has gone viral since.

On Twitter, a 29-second clip has made its rounds, in which a woman can be seen tossing money to the floor for a courier to pick up outside her house.

“Is this how people pay their courier nowadays? Source: [a Twitter] mutual, it occurred recently at 11am,” the Twitter user above wrote.

In the video, a man can be seen picking up a package propped onto the fence, with the courier — who was behind the camera — asking him about payment for the item.

“Have you paid?” the courier asked the man in Javanese.

The man said he has not paid, and the courier responded by telling him that he had to pay IDR235,000 (US$14.96). The man then went back inside the house to pick up his money, seemingly having ordered the package using a cash-on delivery (COD) method.

A woman appeared not long after — presumably the man’s wife — and approached closer without going beyond the fence. She thanked the courier, and unexpectedly threw the money in the direction of the courier, as opposed to handing him the money in a more respectful manner.

It isn’t immediately clear where this incident occurred, though Tribun reported that the video was taken in the Central Java capital of Semarang.

“Let’s just take the lesson from the video, if you’re afraid you can just convey it nicely, not by throwing [the money]. ‘No matter how high your status or position is, if you don’t have [a nice] attitude, you’re no different than rubbish,” the user wrote in a reply to the original tweet.

Netizens have jumped on the viral incident and condemned the couple’s attitude towards the courier.

“If they really didn’t want to give the money on the hands of the courier directly, they could’ve slipped it in between their fences or on the wall as there’s a space between them. Not by tossing it,” a user wrote.

“Envelope. Swear to God the envelope was created to put your money in,” another replied to the previous tweet.

“[Having] two Innova [cars] but they still buy items using COD, m-banking is laughing at them,” joked another.

While it is certainly disheartening to see the incident unfolded in such a way, it is not known why the courier recorded the exchange in the first place, or even if the couple was asked for their consent to be recorded.

Suffice to say, it shouldn’t take a huge effort to simply not be shitty to one another during this difficult time.
