Violent counterattack during drug raid in Matraman leaves two policemen stabbed, one thrown into river

If you think that terrorists are the only serious threat facing the Jakarta’s Police, think again. A drug raid in Matraman, East Jakarta, yesterday ended in shocking violence and one police officer possibly dead after being thrown into a river.

The raids took place on Jalan Slamet Riyadi on Monday afternoon and was carried out by a team of five officers from the Central Jakarta Police Narcotics Unit.

According to Central Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner Hendro Pandowo, the officers were raiding a suspected drug dealing location in the area. Officers initially managed to secure three suspects.

But then a number of people carrying sharp weapons came to the location of the raid and viciously attacked the officers.

“People were carrying machetes to attack the officers who were arresting drug dealers,” said Hendro as quoted by Kompas.

The perpetrators were not able to free the previously secured drug dealers, they also stabbed two officers, both of whom are undergoing treatment at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Central Jakarta.

But the worst fate befell officer Brigadier Taufik Hidayat, who was allegedly thrown into the Ciliwung River. Police are still combing the river searching for him but no signs have been found yet.

After the incident, more police officers came to hunt down the assailants. So far, they have managed to secure one person suspected of attacking the police and a woman who was caught carrying two packets of crystal meth.
