Video: Pro-Budi Gunawan “Supporters” admit to receiving Rp 30k to demonstrate for the corruption suspect

By now, you’ve probably read the news that organizations backing National Police Chief candidate Budi Gunawan paid people around Rp 50k and a lunch box to protest and show their “support” for the corruption suspect.  Now, there is actually video evidence to back that up.

The video above, titled “Demo Bayaran” (paid demonstrators), was uploaded by Youtube user Jakartanicus on February 11. The video focuses on the people who recently took part in a pro-Budi Gunawan rally outside the State Palace.

True enough, it became apparent that most of the demonstrators didn’t even know what they were there for.

“I’m supporting Jokowi to appoint BG (Budi Gunawan) to become National Police [Chief]. That’s it,” said one girl in the video.

“I don’t know. I don’t even watch TV,” the girl said after she was asked why she supported Budi Gunawan.

Skip to 1:50 and the interviewer talks to a few girls who look like they could be 3-in-1 jockeys if they weren’t demonstrating. Interestingly, the girls admitted that they weren’t entirely sure how much they were getting paid for turning up, but one of them said she was promised Rp 30k.

So it really won’t matter to these people at all then, when they learn that President Joko Widodo decided today that he would not appoint Budi Gunawan as the National Police Chief after all.
