The only time many drivers in Jakarta worry about the rules is when they’re about to get ticketed for breaking them. That’s when it’s time to break even more rules to get out of a potential ticket.
On Monday, a group of motorcyclists illegally driving in the busway lane on Jalan Daan Mogot Raya in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, were caught on camera brazenly destroying the concrete separator between the regular road and the TransJakarta busway lane so that they could avoid a police checkpoint (and otherwise inevitable ticket) up ahead.
The checkpoint was set up as part of Operasi Patuh Jaya, one of the Jakarta Traffic Police’s regular operations aimed at increasing “driver discipline” in Jakarta. It definitely didn’t have much disciplinary effect on the drivers in the video, like the one who could be seen giving a thumbs up to other drivers after they managed to knock over the concrete road separators, freeing his fellow two-wheelers to circumvent the law.
Police have not yet said whether they will try to track down and charge any of the drivers seen breaking the barrier in the video.
