VIDEO: Heroic firefighters use crane to save kitty stuck on a bridge in South Jakarta

Although many people in Jakarta treat the capital’s cats more like street rats, there are also plenty of cat lovers looking out for our furry friends. On Tuesday, some heroic firefighters in South Jakarta showed how much they cared by risking their safety to help save a cat that had somehow gotten stuck on the side of the Antasari-Blok M flyover.

The heroic rescue was documented by Caroline Tanujaya, the founder of Cat Rescue Jakarta, who found out about the poor kitty’s plight thanks to reports from her cat lover community.

Caroline arrived at the scene at about 1:30pm and found the cat stuck high up on the side of the flyover in a difficult to reach spot.

“The cat was near some plastic and the cover to some electrical wires. After I saw that, I immediately called the firefighters to come. I called the fire station and said I need a fire truck in South Jakarta,” Caroline said, as quoted by Detik.

Amazingly, when Caroline told the station she needed help saving a cat, they responded by sending a fire truck which arrived at the location just 10 minutes later.

Initiails attempts to rescue the cat by catching it in a box on a pole were unsuccessful. At around 2:30 pm, firefighters decided to use their skylift to get them closer to the hole where the cat was hiding.

By 2:50 pm, the cat had been safely brought down by the firefighters.

“The ones that saved the cat were Pak Taufik and Pak Siregar. There was one other person too, but I forget his name,” said Caroline.

After the successful rescue, Caroline thanked the firefighters and even tried to give them money for going out of their way to save the cat. But the firefighters politely declined.

“They refused my gift. They were very kind,” Caroline said.

Now the black and white cat, named Cemong, is being cared for by Caroline.

“If anyone wants to send cat food, please go ahead. Adoption would be even better,” she said.

Those interested in adopting Cemong or helping Cat Rescue Jakarta can find the contact info in this Facebook post.
