VIDEO: Heavy rains collapse canopy, smash glass and cause flash flood at AEON Mall, 14 injured

Many may think that the inside a sturdy structure like a shopping mall is the safest place to seek shelter during the kind of heavy rainstorms we experienced yesterday. Yet the only reported casualties of yesterday’s powerful downpour came from AEON Mall in BSD, South Tangerang.

14 people were reportedly injured yesterday evening as heavy rain in the area caused one of the mall’s glass entrances to shatter.

The video in the link below shows the terrifying moment when rainwater smashed through the door.

“The incident occurred at 5:30 pm. There was a rainstorm outside; it had been raining since the afternoon. A canopy placed in an outdoor area was collecting rain water, but eventually it collapsed due to the weight and the water fell and smashed a glass door in the side lobby,” said AEON Marketing and Strategy Manager Wenni Wang, as quoted by Kompas.

Some customers and mall employees were standing near the door when it shattered.

“[They] got cut by the shards of glass [and they were] bleeding. Most got cuts on their legs,” Wenni said.

The mall’s statement clarifies rumors previously circulating on social media that the rainstorm caused a part of the mall’s roof to collapse.

All of the victims were taken to a nearby hospital. Nine people were discharged late last night and the rest should be able to go home today.

Correction: “12 injured” was ammended to “14 injured” in the headline.
