A baby tiger was recently born in the Medan Zoo to a mama tiger named Manis (which means “sweet”).
But apparently Manis is not so sweet. She’s pretty much as scary as you would expect a protective mama tiger to be.
“The sex [of the baby] is not yet known because it can not be checked. The mother is still very aggressive,” said Sinardi Ali, director of operations at the Medan Zoo, told Kompas on Saturday.
Manis is an 18-year-old female tiger that has already given birth four times after mating with a male tiger named Anhar.
Sunardi said the Manis’ newest cub looks healthy, weighing in at about 2.3 kilograms with an estimated length of approximately 30 centimeters.
“We are planning to name the cub Benar,” Anhar said.
Medan Zoo now has 20 tigers in its collection, including 14 Sumatran tigers and 6 Bengal tigers.
Sumatran Tigers are a critically endangered species and it is estimated that there are less than 400 of them left in the world.
