Vice Governor wants to build special ayam market that can handle one million chickens per day

You still see the odd chicken running around Jakarta’s neighborhoods and streets, most destined to meet their fate at one of the city’s many small slaughterhouses to ultimately end up at one of the local markets.

Vice Governor of Jakarta Djarot Saiful Hidayat is planning to centralize the city’s chicken supply by developing a special chicken market that can accommodate one million chickens per day.

“This year we are planning to build a special chicken wholesale market,” Djarot said at a chicken slaughterhouse in Matraman yesterday, as quoted by Merdeka.

The vice governor said East Jakarta was an appropriate location for the construction of his grand chicken market. He hoped this would lead to less chicken farmers and slaughterhouses scattered throughout the city.

“Later it will use a wholesale model. Sellers can sell healthy cuts of chicken directly to retailers and other wholesales,” Djarot said.
