Vice Governor Djarot: There are still prostitutes in Jakarta this Ramadan, get rid of them

Ramadan is often a time when police make a very public display of cracking down on illegal alcohol, prostitution (and other things that they turn a blind eye towards) for the sake of appearances during the Holy Month.

However, in his evaluation of this year’s Ramadan, which is nearing its end, Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said that prostitutes are still roaming the streets of Jakarta.

“In this Ramadan and the ones to come [authorities] have to carry out operations to get rid of public [moral] diseases, especially sex workers. This month I can still see them in several locations, please get rid of them,” Djarot said when he addressed the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP), as quoted by Merdeka today.

Djarot did not mention where he happened to see all of these prostitutes, but at least dozens of sex workers have been detained by Satpol PP in Jakarta this Ramadan.

Djarot today also oversaw an alcohol abolition event in the grounds of the National Monument (Monas), during which close to 20 thousand bottles of illegal alcohol confiscated by Satpol PP from January-June of this year were destroyed.

Last week, the General Directorate of Customs and Excise also destroyed over 50 thousands bottles of illegal booze.
