The devastating fire that destroyed over 200 homes last night in the Karang Anyar neighborhood of Sawah Besar in Central Jakarta has left some 2,157 people without a house and most of their worldly possessions.
Vice Governor of Jakarta Djarot Saiful Hidayat, visited the victims of the fire at the shelters set up to house them temporarily. Djarot brought lots of welcome supplies including milk, school bags, notebooks and underwear.
Underwear may seem like an odd thing to bring, but for many of the victims, who had no clothes but those they wore as they fled their burning homes, the vice governor’s gift was probably a Godsend.
Djarot arrived at 8:30 am and was immediately greeted by residents. His focus was on monitor the situation in the shelter.
“The area is very densely populated and prone to fire, it is a problem that must be resolved,” Djarot said as quoted by MetroTV News.
The village head of Karang Anyar, Agus Yahya said, the fire forced 427 families comprised of 2,157 people evacuate their homes.
He is still coordinating with related parties, to ensure the availability of food and beverages as well as portable toilets from Dept. of Health, health services of the health center Sawah Besar, security related apparatus and so on.
