Due to its colonialist history with Indonesia and other strong connections to our country, there are many Indonesians and people with Indonesian roots living in the Netherlands. After Indonesia declared independence from the Dutch in 1945, some 300,000 Indo-Dutch migrated to the Netherlands. And by some estimates from the 1990s and early 2000’s there were around 400,000-500,000 people of mixed Dutch and Indonesian heritage still living there.
“Untuk Selalu” is a lovlely short documentary which profiles four young people living in the Netherlands with very different connections to Indonesia. It is an insightful and touching look at their family histories, how they feel about their own identities, and the unique ways that they try to preserve Indonesian culture in their own lives.
