A student at North Sumatra Muhammadiyah University (UMSU) in Medan is believed to have violently murdering one of his own teachers, with the alleged motive being that he was angered over receiving bad grades in her class.
The teacher, 63-year-old Nur Ain Lubis, died yesterday (which just happened to be National Education Day) after receiving grievous injuries from a knife attack that took place in a bathroom at around 3pm.
Police said she was attacked by 20-year-old student Roymardo Sah Siregar, who was one of Nur’s students in UMSU’s Faculty of Education (FKIP).
Based on reports from witnesses, Roymando and Nur had an argument over his thesis work near the FKIP faculty room. Nur left to go the bathroom and Roymardo followed her. Soon after, Nur’s screams were heard from the bathroom and Roymardo was seen fleeing to the Faculty of Economics.
Dozens of students chased after Roymardo and started beating him when they caught him. Security guards allegedly had trouble securing the suspect when they arrived on the scene.
Police say Nur was already dead from her wounds when she was taken to a nearby hospital.
Another FKIK student named Doni told Kompas that he believed Roymardo killed his teacher due to an issue regarding his grades.
“Before, Roymardo was caught being with a girl in the bathroom. So (Nur) gave him a bad grade, which lowered his GPA,” Doni said.
Police are still investigating the case and it is not yet clear what charges Roymardo will face. Officials decided to close the UMSU Campus for two days in the wake of the horrific crime.
