Understand the Yellow Box Junction road marking if you don’t want to be ticketed

You have hopefully noticed the big yellow box painted in the the traffic light intersection in front of Sarinah on Jalan MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta (shown above) recently. It actually serves to maintain the orderly traffic flow on the road.

But it seems most people are unaware of what the Yellow Box Junction (YBJ) is actually for. To answer people’s queries, the Public Relations Department at the National Police today posted an explanation for the YBJ on Facebook.

The YBJ essentially serves as a tool to prevent gridlock on large traffic light junctions. When the light turns green for one lane, drivers are required to wait until all vehicles from the previously green-lit lane exit the YBJ before they are allowed to go through the junction.

So remember, green doesn’t necessarily mean go, not until the YBJ is clear of all vehicles. Violators can be ticketed if caught, and we know for a fact that there’s a police outpost on that particular junction.
