Ants reportedly thwarted the attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl in South Sulawesi’s South Sukamaju subdistrict at the hands of a 29-year-old man.

According to Sukamaju Police Chief Alimin Pammu, the attempted rape took place on Saturday. The suspect, identified as Toni Irawan, took the girl, identified by her initials AS, for a ride to a neighboring village. When they arrived, Toni asked AS to have sex with him. She got out of the car to run away but Toni managed to catch up to her and convince her to get back in the car.

As they were driving home, Toni stopped the car at another village and was going to force himself on AS.

“The suspect took the victim into the bushes and later laid her down. Just as the suspect was about to carry out the immoral act, they were suddenly bitten by of black ants. The victim managed to get up and run to a residential settlement [for help],” Alimin said yesterday, as quoted by Kompas

Toni was arrested in South Sulawesi’s Malangke subdistrict on Sunday after AS reported the attempted rape to the Sukamaju Police. He is currently being detained by the police for investigation.

Toni was charged with attempting to sexually assault an underage child and if convicted, could serve three to 15 years in prison.
