Ulema Council in Palu says married women shouldn’t post their photos on social media

Got a selfie you’re particularly proud of and can’t wait to share with the world? Well, according to the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Palu chapter in Central Sulawesi, you shouldn’t post it on social media.

That is, if you’re a married Muslim woman.

“Don’t show off your (married Muslim women) photos on social media because it could have negative effects on yourself and your family,” said MUI Palu Chairman Zainal Abidin, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

“I see Muslim women with families are happy to upload photos [of themselves], and are even happier if other Facebook users comment with words like ‘pretty mom.’”

Zainal added that in Islam, a woman’s beauty should only be appreciated by their husbands. That said, it should still be fine for women to post their photos on social media as long as they dress appropriately and are photographed with their husband and/or family.

He did not mention whether men should be allowed to post photos of themselves on social media or not.
