Uber Jakarta still in business despite recent setbacks

Those wishing to hire Uber cars instead of taking conventional taxis can still do so even after the company suffered huge setbacks last week after 30 of the ride-hailing app’s partner cars were impounded in Jakarta.

There have been rumors that Uber was hit hard in Indonesia and ceased operations as a result of crackdowns by authorities. But Uber Corporate Public Affairs Officer Daniel Kusuma denied the rumors.

“We must clarify that Uber is currently still operating in Jakarta,” Daniel announced in a written statement, as picked up by Kompas today.

Technically, this means that Uber cars are still operating outside local public transport regulations. But Daniel said the company is currently in the process of acquiring an official permit from the government to operate legally in Indonesia.

Uber has been maintaining an aggressive international expansion plan despite fierce opposition in some countries from regulators and established taxi industry players.

The company decided to suspend its low-cost service in France after a nationwide taxi strike in protest against Uber turned violent.

San Francisco-based Uber says it operates in some 250 cities and 58 countries.
