People working in Indonesia’s nightlife industry often largely survive on the tips they make to earn a living. That obviously isn’t a lesson taught by two teachers from a pondok santri religious school in Banjar, South Kalimantan, who were this week arrested after police found that they had printed up their own fake money to tip women at a local nightclubs.
“The practice of making counterfeit money is known after the perpetrators used their money to provide tips for services to a woman at a nightspot,” said Central Banjarmasin Police Chief Wahyu Hidayat Sik on Wednesday as quoted by Antara.
Wahyu said a woman at the Grand Discotik in Pekauman Village because suspicious when the two young teachers, both 18 years old, handed her odd-looking IDR 100,000 (US$7.3) and IDR 50,000 bills so she reported it to the security guard.

The guard spotted the forgeries and called the police who quickly came to arrest the teachers at the scene. They were each found carrying several more fake bills.
Police said that one of the suspects, Ardi Maulana, confessed under interrogation to counterfeiting the money using computers and printers located in the offices of their school, Pondok Modern Tarbiyyatul Almualliminal Islamiyah.
Police said the two men were simply amateur forgers who only intended to use the fake money as tips. Nonetheless, they are being charged with counterfeiting money under the criminal code which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
