Two alleged robbers in the Indonesian city of Surabaya were killed after an attempted robbery of a navy officer’s motorcycle at his home, with the major himself thought to have killed at least one of them with a gun.

Major Tunggul Waluyo was at home when a group of three robbers broke into his garage at around 1am on Wednesday and tried to drive out with his motorcycle. According to the chronology report, Tunggul fired three warning shots before firing at the robbers, hitting at least one of them.

One culprit tried to flee the area on his own motorcycle but fell around 50 meters away from the major’s house. He then became the target of a mob beating and died at the scene.

The two others managed to escape the neighborhood but one of them was shot in the leg. He was found dead at another location some time later.

From their initial investigation into the incident, the police also that Tunggul acted in self defense as the robbers were armed and dangerous.

“The culprits were retaliating. They were armed with knives and a pistol,” said Shinto Silitonga, head of Surabaya Police’s Crime Investigation Unit, as quoted by Detik.

“We’re still hunting down one more suspect.”

Gun-related incidents are rare in Indonesia due to the government’s strict gun control regulations. However, there were two fatal shootings during robberies in the Greater Jakarta Area last month, with the police suspecting that the shooters were armed with homemade guns.
