Two Chinese nationals arrested for trying to steal from other passengers’ bags during Garuda flight

Okay, maybe we were wrong the other day about what to worry about while flying. Instead of being concerned about snakes on your plane, maybe you should worry about other passengers trying to steal from your bags mid-flight.

Two Chinese nationals, identified by the police as Zhang Zhengkun, 37, and Zhoo Xiang, 35, were arrested by security officers at Batam’s Hang Nadim International Airport yesterday for allegedly breaking into other passengers’ bags and trying to steal their goods.

A flight attendant became suspicious about the two men after seeing them leaving their seats and eventually caught one of them in the act of opening another passenger’s baggage.

The flight attendant had to wake up a sleeping passenger to confirm that it was their bag being broken into, which contained clothes and a mobile phone.

Riau Islands Police Chief Sam Budigusdian said they were still investigating the two men before charging them.

“We are still investigating because we think they might be part of a syndicate,” Sam said as quoted by Okezone yesterday.

Police said the men did not have a clear reason for going to Batam as they had a ticket to return to Jakarta the same day.
