As far as accidental deaths go, what happened to a woman in Grogol was one of the more unexpected and horrific we’ve ever heard of.

A truck carrying a load of sulfuric acid was driving on the toll road from Grogol going towards Tubagus Angke yesterday. Out of nowhere, another truck rammed it from behind, breaking a pipe and releasing sulfuric acid at the scene.

Unfortunately, the leaked chemical trickled down to underneath the elevated toll road.

“There was a local who lived underneath the toll road who died after coming into contact with the chemical,” said Ipung Purnomo, head of the Traffic Unit at the West Jakarta Police, as quoted by Vivanews yesterday.

The victim was 28-year-old Kusmiati, a woman who lived and was subsequently trapped underneath the toll road at the time of the incident. Kusmiati experienced respiratory failure after inhaling the fumes given off by the sulfuric acid. She was taken to the nearby Atma Jaya Hospital, but passed away soon afterwards.

Meanwhile, the two truck drivers only suffered minor injuries.
