Cheer up, motorcyclists, you will still be able to drive on Jalan Sudirman and around Senayan on May 1 after all. After that, we’re not so sure.
We previously reported that the government was set to extend Central Jakarta’s motorcycle ban onto the aforementioned areas at the beginning of next month, but it appears Okezone, the news outlet we sourced the information from, as well as other national news outlets like Vivanews, all reported on a rumor.
Today, Transportation Agency Head Andri Yansyah clarified that the agency and the Traffic Police division of the Jakarta Metro Police have not yet decided about the motorcycle ban expansion.
“Where did the information come from? Until now we haven’t decided about the motorcycle ban until Senayan Roundabout. There are plans, but we haven’t decided on the time [to implement it],” he said, as quoted by Detik.
Andri added that even if the motorcycle ban is introduced to Jalan Sudirman and Senayan, there would have to be a trial period for the ban just like the one month trial for the first motorcycle ban in Jakarta, during which time motorcyclists caught in prohibited zones were only given warnings.
As things stand, the motorcycle ban only applies to the stretch of Jalan MH Thamrin and Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat in Central Jakarta.
