Traffic violations in Jakarta up 36.5% this year, most violators 31-40 year olds: police

Jakarta drivers are not exactly famous for following traffic rules, but which age group would you expect to be the worst violators of the law? Many people would assume it would be young drivers in their teens and twenties, but, according to the Jakarta Metro Police, it’s actually 31-40 year olds.

The head of the Jakarta police’s traffic directorate, Budiyanto, made that observation while also noting that the number of people caught for traffic violations in Jakarta had risen a sharp 36.58% from January to September of this year compared to the same period of time in 2015.

“The largest group of offenders are those aged 31-40 years old. That is an increase of 61.54% from a year ago,” said Budiyanto said today as quoted by Okezone

According to police data, the number of offenders from January-September 2015 was 716,166 while in January-September of this year it was 978,151 traffic violators.

Of course, one might argue that the steep increase in the number of violators may not be due to decreasing discipline among drivers but a change in how strictly the police enforce the laws. Some might also argue that the reason why 30-somethings have become the biggest group of violators might be because police think they are the ones most likely to pay their fines or other, less legitimate, fees to the police.
